The Search for Virtual Positions
by Randy Derrell – July 12, 2018
Companies like IBM offered programmers options to work from home. But for the most part companies hardly offered any virtual positions. But as technology changed so did the times.
Technology and Working from Home
Technology have evolved big-time over the last decade. We've went from MySpace to Facebook, Candy Crush to multi-player virtual reality combat games, and from the cell phone to having 6 or more people communicate online live streaming.
Advanced technology coupled with better bandwidth has now enabled companies to have employees work from home.
Virtual Positions: Good for Employers and Employees
Many sales and customer service jobs are now worked virtually. And there are several reasons employers are taking advantage of the situation.
- some studies suggest employees are more productive when working virtually
- virtual positions tend to hold better employee retention
- employers save money on office space
Becoming a Virtual Agent
Becoming a virtual work from home agent isn't as hard as most might think. Most companies may require a process close to what most traditionally do.
Synergy Service Solutions require a phone interview, a short assessment to be completed (usually for clear pronunciation and voice tone) and a drug test. Most reputable work from home and virtual agents require the same. It all starts with finding out which companies are hiring.
Finding the Right Company and Virtual Positions
The biggest fear for most is getting burned. Let's face it! We've all seen scams. The old adage holds: "If it seems to good to be true, it probably is." So you'll want to do your due diligence when researching companies.
Here's a short check list. It's not conclusively and also has it's exceptions. Nevertheless, it should at least point you in the right direction.
What to look for in a company offering virtual positions:
- in business for at least a few years
- has a verifiable track-record
- can be reached online and by phone
- has positive reviews in social media
- has a website and social media presence
- correspond in a professional manner
In addition to the above reaching out to someone via social media who has worked with the company may be helpful as well.
Working from Home, Virtually
When it comes to working virtually another fear I hear of is folks having the jitters about setting up a home office. This is by far one of the easiest things you'll do. And by the way, you will probably have lots of fun while you're at it.
While setting up a home office is quite simple, it's a completely different article. But not to fear. Check out our short video on setting up your home office.
